Good afternoon families!

Today we began a conversation around our Ecological Footprint. This concept came up during our field trip to the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area- we made a connection to Sandy's Lookout where Sandy Cross could see the city of Calgary growing and approaching his land which is why he made the decision to make protect it by deeming it a conservation area. We had a discussion about the city of Calgary expanding the city limits and the type of demand that this puts on our land, and the plants and animals that live on our land.

Today we completed our work with the artifacts from the grasslands, which include a moose antler, elk antler, mule deer antlers and a deer jaw. Students applied various sketching techniques such as scumbling, stippling, and shading to add detail and realism to their work.

Please return Glenbow Museum field trip forms as soon as possible. We still require volunteers on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday dates.

At the end of the day we worked on solving this engaging "Mashed up Math" word problem. This problem required us to solve for the unknown using our understanding of addition, subtraction, and doubles.

Have a great evening,

Mrs. Morden

Hello there!

Today we had a lesson on specific sketching techniques that we will be asked to implement when sketching artifacts in class, and during our field work at the Glenbow Museum and other upcoming locations. We ended our day applying these techniques while exploring various artifacts from Grassland animals.

Afterwards we co created (teacher & students) a sketching rubric to help us better understand what is expected when we are sketching objects with realism, details and effective techniques. We will be using this rubric throughout the school year in order to self-assess our work as well as provide feedback to one another.

Sketching Rubric
Outcome: Images can be portrayed in varying degrees of realism.
Pictures can be taken or drawn in different sizes, shapes, angles, perspectives, lengths, colours, ways, and levels of real life.

This afternoon we were pleased to have author Jace Jax and artist Henry Hama visit to read and tell us about their new book Kidsburgh Chronicles Little Jack Jarmagan: A Halloween Tale! We learned about all the details that go into the process of creating a book through the lens of an illustrator & author. How inspiring!

Students have come home with field trip forms for Chevron Open Minds Glenbow Museum School. We are excited for the opportunity to move our classroom learning to the Glenbow Museum for the entire week of November 4th. Thank you to all parents who have already provided dates that they are able to volunteer, please record all dates available on the field trip form whether you have spoken with me or not. We will require 5 volunteers per day- I will send home volunteer confirmation dates & forms once I have received all field trip forms. Please note that due to online payment process changes, you will have to wait approximately 5 days to see the fee owing & pay online. Please return field trip forms promptly.

Enjoy your evening,

Mrs. Morden

Hello!

This week we have been exploring the mathematical concepts of place value and base ten with the help of our Montessori Golden Beads & Stamp Game. Students have been encouraged to show their mathematical thinking in a clear & organized way, while sharing their thinking and process in numbers, pictures and words.

We have recently had the opportunity to explore a few learning websites within our classroom. The first is raz-kids, please visit the website https://www.raz-kids.com/ and login under my username: hmorden0 The other website is Dance Mat Typing, which helps students develop and master typing skills: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr Explore these two websites at home!

In preparation for tomorrow's field trip students enjoyed the warm weather in the school garden on Monday by participating in a 'sit spot'. We took 10 minutes to sit in a space, make observations and record our ideas in our field journals. Afterwards, we did a Gallery Walk in order to share our work and provide feedback to others.

Thank you for all your work in preparing your child for tomorrow's field trip:

Have a nice evening,

Mrs. Morden

Good afternoon!

We ended our day with Mrs. Morden modeling a Thinking Routine titled "I used to think, But now I know". After visiting the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area on Tuesday evening for a teacher inservice, Mrs. Morden learned that she was identifying the native grass 'northern fescue' incorrectly. "I used to think that brome was northern fescue, But now I know that brome is an invasive grass that makes northern fescue hard to find." This opened a conversation about having a flexible mindset, and being able to change our ideas after learning new information and becoming more informed. This also opened about a conversation about native and invasive species. We watched a helpful video created by the British Columbian government that highlights some of the invasive species in BC and what we can do to help. To further out learning, students are asked to look into native and invasive species this evening, particularly the oh' so common pet goldfish.

This week in class students have been working to create a blind book tasting event for other students within our school. Students have chosen a book from our library, created clues for it, wrapped it in brown paper, written clues on the exterior of the brown paper wrapping and tied it with twine. Today we placed the books in the display cabinet, listing a series of steps for the school that will help guide them in the process.

Please return Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area field trip forms by Monday. Families that are wishing to pay on-line for this field trip may need to wait a few days to make their payment due to some upgrades to our on-line payment system. For any families who did order FUN LUNCH on Thursday, October 10th you will need to cancel these prior to this Saturday, alternatively students can bring the fun lunch home with them at the end of the day.

Have a great night,

Mrs. Morden

Good afternoon!

Room 5 students have had a great start to the week!

This week we explored an open-ended math problem called Make 37. Try playing this game with your child, having a discussion about strategies used.

Students are working diligently to complete the photography collages and line drawing art for their sketchbook covers. We hope to have these completed by the end of the week.

We are going on a field trip to the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area on October 10th 2019. We pulled up the address on google maps this afternoon, and noticed that it is outside of the city, South West of Lake Bonavista School. Please complete & return forms by October 7th. We will require four volunteers for this field trip.

Everyone wore their best smile for School Photo Day! :)

Have a great evening,

Mrs. Morden
