Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

It has been a productive few weeks in Room 5. Students have begun exploring multiplication and division concepts. Through creating concrete models with the Montessori materials, students have been demonstrating success in their understanding of what multiplication and division means and looks like. They have been encouraged to demonstrate their thinking in models, strategies, numbers, symbols and words when solving problems. The other day, we spoke about the relationships between the four operations.

Since returning from Winter Break, Room 5 & 7 have been engaged in the Design Process in order to build a bridge for a specific purpose or design a simple machine to solve a problem. We are currently wrapping up the building and testing of our prototypes.

We love when we can find practical math problems connected to our everyday experiences. We worked on the following math problem to help Mrs Morden and Ms Bouchard organize the cityscape artwork. Ask your child how they solved it!

Ms Bouchard and Mrs Morden would like to organize the hallway cityscape art in an array. Based on how they have started, calculate how many cityscapes will fit on the 3 hallway panels.

How many will fit as an array on the 3 hallway panels? How many student artworks need to be displayed? Will they all fit in the panels between Room 6 & 7? If not, propose another place to display the rest of the art.

Show your thinking with materials, models, numbers, symbols and words.

We began looking at different sketchbook techniques that we have used in the past, and started to create a reference pages in our visual art journals. Mrs Morden will be attending a session on Sketchbook Techniques at Teachers Convention this weekend, and is eager to learn new ideas and share them with the students next week!

Have a great Family Day long weekend! See you next Tuesday!
