Dear Families,

Thank you to the families who were able to come to our school Open House last night. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to share the work they have done so far. Thank you for engaging in our data collection of "What story from 1969 makes you stop to listen?"

We went to the library today for each student to choose a book for which they will be responsible for creating clues for other students in our school to experience a Blind Book Tasting. Students spent time today to read the book,  create a draft of a meaningful message and/or picture connected. On Monday students will wrap the book they choose in brown kraft paper and add clues to peak other students interests in considering this book to read. We are excited to provide other students and staff a similar experience that we had in room 5.

Today we watched a video of an oral story by Phyllis Webstad that shared her personal experiences with residential schools. Following viewing the video students shared how they connected with this particular story. While sharing some students expressed emotions of sadness and empathy. While students couldn't believe that Phyllis had to sleep at the school for 300 sleeps! The conversation began with students sharing their prior knowledge of residential schools and why they existed. Next week we will continue our conversations. We ask that if possible to recognize and support Phyllis Webstad and her experience on Monday by wearing an orange shirt to demonstrate EVERY CHILD MATTERS!

Please continue to return any first week forms and demographic reports. These certainly help us at school to get ahold of you in the event of an emergency.

Thank you to the families that continue to sell AdMazing Savings Coupon books to support Lake Bonavista School's fundraiser. Our deadline to sell books is on Thursday, October 10th.

If your child has a headset at home to use while on technology at school, please send the headset to school if they haven't already brought it in. To respect the learning of others, students will use their personal headsets to listen to stories and videos on a variety of educational websites. This year students will learn how to use assistive technology to allow text to be read to them.

Good afternoon!

Room 5 & 7 had an amazing morning on our walking field trip to the edge of Fish Creek Park. The students showed great stamina as they walked for over an hour in a two and a half hour span. Our focus was to observe the landscape as well as the colours found. Students began using their field journals, and will continue to use these throughout the year as we go on many outings and field trips. Before departing, we looked at the work of Lyn Baldwin who is a professor and ecologist in British Columbia. We felt inspired by her field journal work. Professor Baldwin states "drawing forces my students to pay attention, to observe"- a statement that I agree with whole heartedly.
We hope to return to this space in our community as we continue to develop our sense of place.

Have a restful evening,

Mrs. Morden

Walking Field Trip

Hello Room 5 Families,

Room 5 & 7 will be going on a walking field trip tomorrow (Tuesday, September 24th, 2019) to the south end of Acadia Drive to overlook Fish Creek Provincial Park. Students are required to be dressed in appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. The walk is scheduled to be approximately 30 minutes both ways. We will be departing the school at 9:00 am and returning by 11:30 am.
Students will be bringing their backpacks with their lunch kits, we will be having our snack once we arrive to our destination.
The purpose of this trip is to get students outside as they begin to deepen their understanding of the land that surrounds us. Students will begin working in their Field Journals, as they sketch and make observations about the land and continue to develop their sense of place.

Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns,
Mrs. Morden

Good evening families,

Today students practiced slowing down and making thoughtful observations through sketching and labeling with a variety of natural artifacts. Observations included the artifact's colour, texture, possible function and it's importance to the environment, people, animals/plants etc. The purpose of the lesson and work was to further introduce students to our inquiry this year and to begin the process of slowing down to observe in preparation for Museum School. (November 4 through 8th)

Dear Families,

Yesterday, students worked on the photography skill "get closer" when taking photographs of nature in our school field and garden. We will be using these photographs as part of our sketchbook covers.

This week we worked on completing a personal reading profile to share our reading preferences. Students are in the process of creatively arranging their reading profile highlights in their visual arts journals using the techniques tape transfer, framing & key words. Ask your child how to create a tape transfer!

We would like to give our Montessori society, MAPSS for designing and providing all students with beautiful journals to celebrate the beginning of our new school year.

Students brought home an ADmazing savings coupon booklet and order form home yesterday, please read the information below for more details.

Have a great weekend,

Mrs. Morden

Hello families!

Students in Room 5 are settling well into classroom routines and expectations. We are learning how to move about our shared classroom & school space with grace and courtesy, showing respect for ourselves, others and the environment.

To help better organize work expectations during work period, students have started using personal Daily Work Journals. At the beginning of each morning, Daily Work Journals are filled out and students are expected to use these throughout the day as they can refer to their list of jobs for the day, helping them become organized and self directed learners.

We have had a very busy start to the school year, already delving into some exciting projects.

Students worked diligently to create realistic and accurate self portraits for the first page in their visual journals. We spoke about sketching with light lines, as well as adding details that make each of us unique such as eye colour, freckles, jewelry etc.

In an effort to get to know one another, we completed an art projected titled "I can't imagine life without". Students brainstormed people and things that they cannot imagine their life without, we then engaged in a lesson on how to artistically organize our page paying attention to space, font, line, and colour.

Ask your child about these packages that were found in our classroom Monday morning:

Please be sure to return completed forms in the brown envelope to the school by the end of this week. If your envelope has been misplaced, please let Mrs Morden know right away.

Have a wonderful evening,

Mrs. Morden

Good afternoon!

What a great first week of exploration, learning & getting to know each other in Room 5.

Today we met our grade 1 & 2 buddies, we cant wait to spend the year learning alongside with them!

This morning we started drawing self portraits in our visual journals, they are beginning to look very artistic and realistic!

On the first day of school we answered several of survey questions such as: How do you get to school? What colour are your eyes? We then had a lesson on how to create a pictograph to show this data. We know that a pictograph must have: a key, pictures, a title, colour

We had an awesome week together, we are really excited for next week!

Hope you have a good night & we will see you next week,

Room 5 & Mrs. Morden
