I will continue to hold Google Meets for students to connect with myself as well as one another. As I understand that all students benefit in different ways, I have been scheduling a mixture of both small group as well as whole class Google Meets. The invitation for a Google Meet shows up in Google Classroom at the top, please help your child look for these invitations and RSVP. This upcoming Wednesday, May 13th we will have a whole class Google Meet.

Please know that I am here to support you and your child understand, navigate and complete assignments. Once an assignment is turned in, I try my best to provide timely feedback connected to the assignment success criteria. Sometimes I may return the assignment for students to make changes and improvements. Please contact me through email if you and your child require any type of support, whether that be through email, a one-on-one Google Meet, or phone call.

Thank you and I hope everyone in your household is doing well,

Updates

I have sent an updated IXL username and password to each student's student email address. IXL is a great learning website to practice math. We had to sign up for another 30 day free trial, therefore the student usernames have changed.

https://ca.ixl.com/

Thank you to the parents who have already submitted feedback through the Google Form. So far, the majority of you are beginning to feel confident with navigating Google Classroom while students are still unsure. Workload and Communication are "just right".

https://forms.gle/8J3Z96RAVQ5ZTpbJ8

Did you know.... Google Classroom, Google Meet and Google Docs can be downloaded as APPS on your tablet device. This makes signing in and accessing assignments much quicker and more student friendly!

Thank you for your grace and support as we continue to learn and navigate through Ongoing Learning.

Please email me with any individual questions or concerns.

Overview of April 15th Google Meet

During Room 5's April 15th Google Meet we spoke about…

  • Google Meet Etiquette- this is just like a lesson in the classroom, it is expected that you are demonstrating respect for the speaker (teacher & peers) at all times. The side chat is for typing in a question mark to notify Mrs. Morden that you have a question & would like to speak- just like raising your hand in a lesson.

  • How to navigate Google Classroom-
    • Overview for the Week Material (list of jobs just like in our classroom, responsible work choices, weekly work journal)
    • Assignments (how to input work directly into the assignments (in a textbox), how to input photos of work, how to input additional documents when submitting an assignment)
    • Flipgrid & Question poll will be other tools Mrs Morden uses for student interaction and student voice

  • Submitting Work- solely on Google Classroom
  • Quality of Work- In your assignments, you will see Success Criteria and Self Assessments. Mrs. Morden will respond to your assignment with feedback in the comment section and may 'RETURN' the work to you to make changes, you can then resubmit.
  • Other topics that came up:
    • Raz-Kids- If you cannot log in or see that you are on the wrong reading level, please contact Mrs. Morden for help
    • Prodigy- This is another online gaming website that can be used to practice math skills. Mrs. Morden will not be creating a class account at this time.
    1. How to create a division symbol  ÷ using your keyboard: hold down the keys OPTION and  /     at the same time

It was so great to see everyone's smiling faces! I truly have missed each and every one of you, and can't wait until we can be together again!

Let me know if you have any individual questions.

On Friday, I will be sending parents a GOOGLE FORM to survey how you as a family are feeling after two weeks of Google Classroom instruction. I would appreciate the feedback as I understand, as a parent myself, the realities of this shift in routine.

All the best,
Mrs. Morden

April 14-17 Google Classroom Learning Tasks

Happy Tuesday Room 5 Families!

I hope that you had a eggcellent weekend!

There are new assignments posted for this week on Google Classroom. It is expected that students spend 1 hr a day working towards the completion of these assignments. If parents have questions or difficulties with the assignments please send me a direct email to hlmorden@cbe.ab.ca. If students have questions regarding the assignments they can add a question/comment on the right hand side of the assignment. The goal is for assignments to be submitted through Google Classroom (not emailed or shared on Google Drive) by Sunday so that students can have a fresh start with new assignments on the Monday.

On Wednesday, we will be having our first Google Meet. This will be a chance for me to speak with the students about Google Classroom, their expectations as students, and to check in to see how everyone is doing. Please confirm if your child can attend our Google Meet by answering the poll question on Google Classroom.

I hope that everyone is doing well, warmer weather is on the way!

Google Classroom

We will be using Google Classroom as a learning platform as we continue ongoing learning from home. Below is a brief introduction to Google Classroom and how students in Grade 3/4 at Lake Bonavista School will be accessing the tool.

Google Classroom
Google Classroom is an online platform that enables us to communicate with our students as well as assign and distribute tasks. Google Classroom gives us the ability work with our students in safe, manageable, and appropriate way. It will also help students manage their work while learning from home. Students will access Google Classroom using their CBE G Suite ID (username@educbe.ca). As we begin to use these new teaching and learning tools, we will work with our students and their families to help them understand both the benefits and risks of using online tools.

Room 5- A continuation of our learning

Happy FriYAY Room 5 students and families,

As a continuation of our learning, students are encouraged to read every day! Students can log in to Raz-kids, with the teacher username hmorden0.  https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login

We have also used Dancemat Typing as a resource to practice our typing skills. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr

In addition, we have been working on poetry the past few weeks, ask your child which poetry genres they have practiced (haiku, limerick, free verse, quatrain, cinquain) and see if you can create some new poems!

To help support extra math practice, I have signed us up for a free 30 day trial for the website IXL  https://www.ixl.com. Please contact me directly for your child's log in information. This website is aligned to the provincial curriculum and you can download IXL's free tablet apps for iPad, Android or Kindle and sign in with your child's username and password.

It is officially Spring! Today would have also marked the first day of Spring Break for all students. Remember to get outside and play in the fresh air!

Suggestions for Learning from Home | K-9

The following is a message from the Calgary Board of Education

Suggestions for Learning from Home | K-9
Class cancellations are unusual and challenging events.  During this short period before spring break,
we encourage families to maintain a balanced and consistent routine for children; including regular
sleeping and eating times, breaks for activity and outdoor time, and healthy boundaries on screen
time. After spring break, additional learning resources and activities will be shared to support
students in learning.
Children are naturally curious learners and there are opportunities at home to engage their learning.
We have created a webpage that offers a variety of educational ideas to support literacy, numeracy
and wellness at home for this week. The resources are meant as suggestions only. You may choose
to use the links and activities as needed over the next few days as more long-term educational
programming is considered.

Friday, March 13th, 2020

Good afternoon Room 5 families,

Students have been working diligently these past few weeks as we continue to explore the question "How does land shape the world we see?". We began by looking at the world map through the use of the Montessori Puzzle Maps. Mrs. Morden and Ms. Bouchard created an example and a non example of how to use this material as well as reference guides to create a physical region map that represents Alberta, Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. We took the example and non example to co create multi-step success criteria, in a group discussions students shared that we (teachers with students) build criteria to know what to do in order to be successful with a task.

Throughout the week, students have been exploring several authentic artifacts from a Fort Calgary Museo Kit. Students took time to look at and reflect on past artifact sketches in order to determine what they are doing well and their next steps for sketching. Some students chose to focus on using more sketching techniques in order to make their sketches more accurate and realistic. Furthermore, we looked more closely at the thinking routines connected to artifacts and how we can be more successful in creating meaningful observations through our wonderings and questions. We looked at the features of Thin and Thick Questions, they will help guide us in developing high order questioning skills and making our thinking more visible.

To continue our exploration of multiplication and division concepts. We have been listening to and pulling out the features of mathematical stories. Students will engage in creating their own mathematical story next week!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Morden

Important Note

Dear Families,
Based on the changing provincial and local response to COVID-19, the CBE has given us direction to postpone our Student Led Conferences on March 19 and 20, 2020.

All CBE schools have been given direction to postpone or cancel events that include populations from other schools and/or parents or other community members, such as Parent-Teacher Interviews, celebrations of learning, drama/musical performances, dances, athletic competitions, etc. This decision is effective from Mar. 12 until the end of March break. This decision will be revisited during March break to determine whether events should be rescheduled.
Events outside of school hours that include the regular student and staff population of the school (school clubs, practices, etc) and scheduled field trips may continue at this time.
I know this may be disappointing news. Students and staff have spent a significant amount of time preparing for this event, but the health of our community is our priority.
For the most up to date information about the CBE’s approach to COVID-19 and the actions we are taking, please visit our website. Answers to frequently asked questions will continue to be posted as information becomes available.

Thank you.
Take care,
Carole Jones

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

It has been a productive few weeks in Room 5. Students have begun exploring multiplication and division concepts. Through creating concrete models with the Montessori materials, students have been demonstrating success in their understanding of what multiplication and division means and looks like. They have been encouraged to demonstrate their thinking in models, strategies, numbers, symbols and words when solving problems. The other day, we spoke about the relationships between the four operations.

Since returning from Winter Break, Room 5 & 7 have been engaged in the Design Process in order to build a bridge for a specific purpose or design a simple machine to solve a problem. We are currently wrapping up the building and testing of our prototypes.

We love when we can find practical math problems connected to our everyday experiences. We worked on the following math problem to help Mrs Morden and Ms Bouchard organize the cityscape artwork. Ask your child how they solved it!

Ms Bouchard and Mrs Morden would like to organize the hallway cityscape art in an array. Based on how they have started, calculate how many cityscapes will fit on the 3 hallway panels.

How many will fit as an array on the 3 hallway panels? How many student artworks need to be displayed? Will they all fit in the panels between Room 6 & 7? If not, propose another place to display the rest of the art.

Show your thinking with materials, models, numbers, symbols and words.

We began looking at different sketchbook techniques that we have used in the past, and started to create a reference pages in our visual art journals. Mrs Morden will be attending a session on Sketchbook Techniques at Teachers Convention this weekend, and is eager to learn new ideas and share them with the students next week!

Have a great Family Day long weekend! See you next Tuesday!
